A Foodie’s Roadtrip through Miramichi (5 Days)

The Miramichi brings together an eclectic mix of Acadian, Irish, Scottish & Mi’kmaq flavours. Savour fresh ingredients like wild blueberries or fresh from the wharf lobster.

Day One (Upper Miramichi)

Arrive at the 4.5 star Ledges Inn and relax while taking in splendid views of the river or perhaps even try angling. Everyday has its own menu-du-jour, so you can order à la carte from the seafood and non-seafood options. Start the evening with pre-dinner drinks and hors d’oeuvres whilst mingling in the Great Room. Order your choice of gourmet entrée and main course. Finish off with a scrumptious dessert (it’ll be difficult!) and for the “Grande Finale”, Chef Luke prepares a very spectacular flambéed coffee.

Day Two (Metepenagiag)

Stop at the Village Family Restaurant for old fashioned molasses cookies for the road. On Saturdays you can drop by the Doak Historic site where you can “preserve a memory” with demonstrations of traditional picking, preserving and butter making; or take a stroll through the community garden. As you continue along route 8, you’ll come down a hill with a sharp turn, named “Molasses Hill” (we’ll let you guess why!)
In the afternoon, arrive in Metepenagiag and experience Ookdotaan. Your personal, guided tour of the 3,000 year old Aboriginal community begins with the heavenly aromas of the cooking fire and traditional foods. View the exhibits and learn more about the lives of the people who called this land ‘home’. Then, gather fresh ingredients for the tea that will be served with food prepared in an outdoor cooking shelter. Sample seasonal fish or summer game with wild rice, bannock bread and fragrant cedar tea. Don’t forget to linger around the campfire to hear more stories about this ancient way of life.
That evening, choose where to rest your weary head and full belly; in the comfort of the Outdoor Lodge or perhaps opt for the Tipi Retreat Experience. Sleeping under the stars, in the fresh air, surrounded by such a rich history is sure to take your understanding and appreciation of the culture to a whole new level. Not to mention, you’ll be disconnected from the noise of everyday life, and at peace with nature, making it a truly spiritual experience.

Days 3 & 4 (Miramichi)

If the sun is shining and you want to spend the day on the water before heading to your next stop, Stewart’s Tubing is just a six minute drive from Metepenagiag.
Make your way into the city, if you aren’t in a rush, take the scenic route along the riverbank and arrive at the Rodd Miramichi. Watch the sunset over the Miramichi river from the 1809 Restaurant Patio; try local favourites like a pint of Timbership Brewing or Maison Beausoleil Oysters.

Must Dos for Foodies

  • Savour a glass of wine and learn about the history of our region while aboard Max Aitken river boat. 90-minute tours depart Ritchie Wharf at 2 p.m. and other times throughout the day.
  • Bask in the sun in the beer garden at one of Miramichi’s most historic locales, O’Donaghue’s Irish Pub.  We’d recommend giving the Lobster Arancini a try!
  • Try the delectable German baked goods from the Napan Bay-kery on Water St. Even better, make your goods part of a picnic to enjoy on a tour of Beaubears Island.

Fun Detours

  • Visit the market – on Friday’s (Newcastle) and Saturdays (Water St., Chatham).
  • Explore the quaint shops of Water Street
  • Try the zipline or wander the trails of French Fort Cove
  • Experience tea with Lord Beaverbrook. (Mondays by Reservation)
  • An afternoon of cones and Mini-Putt at Mauries

Day 5 – Tabusintac

Few things are more refreshing than jumping off the dock into the cool river on a warm summer’s day. You can do just that at Tabusintac Chalets. Contact the Chalets before hand about organizing a guided boat trip or a “straight from the wharf” lobster boilup.  For the perfect appetizer, swing by Maison Beausoleil in Neguac for a carton of freshly harvested oysters.

In August you can forage along the banks in front of the Chalets for wild blueberries (if you “accidentally”  pick more than you eat, you can grab wild blueberry muffins at Tazza Cafe). July is for choosing those perfect strawberries at the U-Pick.
